Player Guides: RTP, Volatility & the Rules That Actually Matter

The reference shelf: how RTP and volatility actually work, how jackpot networks pay out, the current UK bonus rules, and a running list of slots that don’t really exist. No game reviews here — just the concepts every other guide on this site assumes you already know.

New long-form guides appear in the feed only after publication. The reference table and published pathways below are available now; scheduled slugs are deliberately not exposed as links.

Essential slot terms in one table

This is the short version: enough to read a family comparison accurately without pretending that a definition is a playing strategy.

Term What it means What to check on a real game
RTP A theoretical long-run return calculated across a very large number of plays, not a promise for one session. Open the help/paytable and check the exact installed build. The same title can be supplied at more than one RTP.
House edge 100% minus RTP. A 96% theoretical RTP corresponds to a 4% theoretical house edge. Use it for like-for-like long-run comparison, not to predict the next spin.
Volatility How unevenly a game tends to distribute wins. Higher volatility generally means longer dry spells and more concentrated outcomes. Provider labels are not standardised across studios, so compare the stated label with feature structure and max win.
Max win The published theoretical payout ceiling, commonly expressed as a multiple of total stake. Check whether the figure includes a jackpot, bonus buy or configuration unavailable to GB players.
Paylines / ways / clusters / scatter pays Different rules for deciding which symbol arrangements pay. Similar-looking grids can use completely different win logic. Read the game rules rather than inferring the mechanic from the artwork.
Selectable RTP A supplier may distribute several maths configurations under the same title. Record the in-game figure and date; a provider’s headline build may not be the operator’s installed build.
Progressive jackpot A prize pool that grows from eligible play, either locally at one operator or across a network. Check eligibility, stake requirements, whether a side bet contributes and whether the quoted value is local or networked.
RNG The random-number generator determines outcomes under the game’s certified rules. No time of day, stake pattern or recent result makes a random game “due”.

Published mechanic explainers

These pages are already live and connect definitions to actual game families:

  • Hold & Win slots — locked symbols, respins and the many supplier names for the same broad format.
  • Cluster pays — adjacent symbol groups instead of fixed lines.
  • Cascading reels — winning symbols disappear so one paid spin can produce another reaction.
  • Scatter pays — matching symbols can pay anywhere on the grid without adjacency.
  • Megaways — the licensed variable-reel engine and the families built around it.

What this section covers

Every family guide and Features page on this site leans on a handful of ideas — RTP, volatility, how a jackpot network actually pools money, what a studio’s official page really says versus what gets repeated everywhere else. Rather than re-explain those basics on every single page, we’ve put the long-form version here once, and link back to it from wherever it’s relevant.

Where to start

New to the terminology? The glossary covers the shorthand — RTP, volatility, scatter, wild, ways-to-win — in one place. Want the maths behind the numbers? What RTP Actually Means and Slot Volatility Explained go deeper on the two figures that decide how a game plays. Chasing a big jackpot? How Progressive Jackpot Networks Work explains why some pots reset and others don’t. And if a “sequel” you’ve heard about doesn’t show up anywhere on this site, it’s probably on Slots That Don’t Exist.

Current UK rules

Two standing-rule pages live in our Features section rather than here, since they’re tied to specific mechanics: the January 2026 UKGC bonus rules (the 10x wagering cap) and the Bonus Buy UK explainer (why the buy button is switched off for GB players).
